“…The aim of our research was to evaluate the host response of commercial apple and pear cultivars to Erwinia amylovora and to select traditional cultivars as sources of resistance for future breeding programmes. We also tested apple hybrids that displayed considerable resistance to Venturia inaequalis and Podosphera leucotricha (Tóth et al ., 1994), In addition, we started to screen domestic gene sources, mostly traditional apple and pear cultivars, for disease resistance, and to evaluate the susceptibility or resistance of commercially grown apple and pear cultivars and some Japanese pear cultivars that are candidates for naturalization in Hungary. Hybrids were selected for further experiments on fireblight resistance.…”
