Apple Flavonoid Phloretin Inhibits Escherichia coli O157:H7 Biofilm Formation and Ameliorates Colon Inflammation in Rats

Abstract: Pathogenic biofilms have been associated with persistent infections due to their high resistance to antimicrobial agents, while commensal biofilms often fortify the host's immune system. Hence, controlling biofilm formation of both pathogenic bacteria and commensal bacteria is important in bacterium-related diseases. We investigated the effect of plant flavonoids on biofilm formation of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7. The antioxidant phloretin, which is abundant in apples, markedly reduced E. coli … Show more

“…It was also demonstrated to exhibit similar properties in intestinal inflammatory diseases. It reduces E. coli O157:H7 biofilm formation as it does not harm commensal E. coli K-12 biofilms (Lee et al 2011). Phloretin specifically inhibits phosphoinositide hydrolysis induced by Prostaglandins (PGs) PGD and PGF, through interfering with PGF specific receptors in cultured rat astrocytes (Kitanaka et al 1993).…”

“…Phl and its derivatives have found wide usage in food and beverage industry as well as additive in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (Zhu et al 2013;Kim et al 2014). There are several research articles published related to phlorizin and its derivatives' pharmacological effect (Ostroumova et al 2013;Shin et al 2011;Lee et al 2011). Especially, the effect of phlorizin on glucose uptake and diabetes has been intensively examined and was reviewed.…”

“…Effects of Phloretin include decrease of oxidative stress [11], inhibition of inflammation [12], increase endothelial nitric oxide production and vasodilation [13,14], downregulation of endothelial adhesion molecules [15], and inhibition of platelet activation [15]. Some of the effects are due to estrogenic activity of the substance [13,14,16].…”
