Apple Pollination Biology for Stable and Novel Fruit Production: Search System for Apple Cultivar Combination Showing Incompatibility, Semicompatibility, and Full-Compatibility Based on theS-RNaseAllele Database

Abstract: Breeding and cultivation of new apple cultivars are among the most attractive and important issues for apple researchers. As almost all apple cultivars exhibit gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI), cross-pollination between genetically different cultivars and species is essential not only for stable fruit production, but also for breeding of new cultivars. For cross-pollination by insect or hand pollination, pollen viability and pistil fertility are key factors, but also the mechanism of GSI has to be taken… Show more

“…In addition to preventing self‐fertilization, SI can also act as a barrier between individuals sharing the same SI phenotype and, thus, influences pollen‐mediated gene flow by limiting compatible matings (Bateman, ). Moreover, by interfering with plant production and breeding, SI is a major obstacle for constant fruit production in crop species (Sassa, ), as well as for the breeding of new cultivars and the development of inbred lines (Matsumoto, ). Deciphering the SI system of plants is therefore of great interest in agronomy, horticulture, and forestry.…”

“…Under conditions of cold irregularity during the winter period, typical of the southern region of Brazil, the low synchronization of flowering of the main cultivars and their respective pollinators is frequent, leading to low fructification and production irregularity (HAWERROTH et al, 2011;GARRAT et al, 2014;MATSUMOTO, 2014;QUINET et al, 2016). In addition, low yields can occur under conditions adverse to pollination, such as occurrence of rainfall during flowering, deficiency of pollinating insects and when flowering intensity is reduced.…”

“…This has been extensively conducted in commercial fruit production of apple. Identification of the S-genotypes is thus essential for selecting suitable pollen donors in commercial fruit production, and also to initiate breeding programs (Matsumoto 2014).…”
