Applicability of glucocorticoid toxicity index in pemphigus: Comparison between two groups of rituximab‐treated and rituximab‐naïve patients

Abstract: Rituximab (RTX) combined with short-term glucocorticoids (GC) is an effective therapeutic option for pemphigus. The newly developed Glucocorticoid Toxicity Index (GTI) tool provides the possibility to measure GC toxicities over time. To compare 1-year GTI between two groups of RTX-treated and RTX-naïve patients with pemphigus. The responsiveness of the GTI was also investigated. A prospective cohort of 129 adults with newly diagnosed pemphigus was conducted. GC-related toxicities were assessed at 3-month inter… Show more

“…Rituximab can be used alone to treat pemphigus [ 92 , 93 ] or in combination with glucocorticoids, corticosteroids, etc. [ [94] , [95] , [96] ]. However, rituximab increases the risk of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PJP) and may have side effects such as urticaria and shingles [ [97] , [98] , [99] ].…”

“…Using corticosteroids alone or combined with steroid‐sparing immunosuppressants has helped control the disease. However, these conventional agents come with serious adverse events and morbidities, especially in long‐term use 7,8 . Therefore, dermatologists have constantly been challenged to choose the most efficient with the slightest complication therapeutic agents.…”

“…
Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune diseases that cause intraepithelial blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, with potentially life-threatening consequences. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing pemphigus, which typically involves a combination of corticosteroids, rituximab, and other immunosuppressant drugs (Kianfer et al, 2022;Mazaherpour et al, 2022). Various scoring instruments have been developed over the past few decades to assess the severity and activity of autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs).
