Nitrides represent an intriguing class of functional materials with a broad range of application fields. Within the past decade, the ammonothermal method became increasingly attractive for the synthesis and crystal growth of nitride materials. The ammonothermal approach proved to be eminently suitable for the growth of bulk III-nitride semiconductors like GaN, and furthermore provided access to numerous ternary and multinary nitrides and oxonitrides with promising optical and electronic properties. In this minireview, we will shed light on the latest research findings covering the synthesis of nitrides by this method. An overview of synthesis strategies for binary, ternary, and multinary nitrides and oxonitrides, as well as their properties and potential applications will be given. The recent development of autoclave technologies for syntheses at high temperatures and pressures, in situ methods for investigations of crystallization processes, and solubility measurements by ultrasonic velocity experiments is briefly reviewed as well. In conclusion, challenges and future perspectives regarding the synthesis and crystal growth of novel nitrides, as well as the advancement of autoclave techniques are discussed.

Our attempts to synthesize the hitherto unknown binary copper(I) fluoride have led to first successes and a serendipitious result: By conproportionation of elemental copper and copper(II) fluoride in anhydrous liquid ammonia, two copper(I) fluorides were obtained as simple NH3 complexes. One of them presents an example of ligand-unsupported "cuprophilic" interactions in an infinite [Cu2 (NH3 )4 ](2+) chain with alternating Cu-Cu distances. We discovered that both copper(I) fluorides can easily be converted into Cu3 N at room temperature, just by applying a vacuum. Additionally, we investigated the formation mechanism of the classical synthesis route of Cu3 N that starts with CuF2 and flowing NH3 in the temperature range between ambient and 290 °C by means of thermal analysis and in situ neutron diffraction. The reaction proceeds at elevated temperatures through the formation of a blue and amorphous ammoniate Cu(NH3 )2 F2 , the reformation of CuF2 , and finally the redox reaction to form Cu3 N.

Electro discharge machining (EDM) is an important manufacturing process for hard‐to‐cut materials like nickel‐based alloys, e.g., alloy 718. Its high yield strength at high temperature make it a suitable material for vessels for high‐pressure/high‐temperature applications, in particular for ammonothermal pressure vessels. This report first summarizes the relationship between microstructure and properties of alloy 718 for practitioners. Second, it focuses on the metallographic description of alloy 718 surfaces proceeded by EDM and its behavior during use as equipment for ammonoacidic systems. Furthermore, the finding of suitable post‐processing, namely honing, to achieve high stability of the surface at high‐pressure atmosphere is included.
