Application and Efficiency of a Series-Hybrid Drive for Agricultural Use Based on a Modified Version of the World Harmonized Transient Cycle

Abstract: Off-road vehicles and transportation are vital for agricultural economics, yet the transition to green energies is challenging. To make this transition easier, a tool that enables the testing of heavy-duty off-road vehicles in various scenarios was created. Based on the methods of the World Harmonized Transient Cycle (WHTC), a new Hybrid Operational Cycle (HOC) that reflects the features of agricultural work was created and applied in a graphical model simulation. This was a newly developed methodology. The cy… Show more

“…The series hybrid tractor is equipped with an engine and a generator on the basis of the pure electric tractor. By reasonably controlling the operating state of the engine, it can achieve the same power performance as the traditional diesel tractor while reducing fuel consumption [8][9][10].…”

“…The total stored engine moving operating region energy is obtained by multiplying power differences between the engine's average j-class power, P e,j , and the required traction power, j-th class, with the engine's operating time, T j,mwa (15): W s,mwa = ∑ j T j,mwa (P e,j − P j (15) The total recuperated energy from braking is obtained by the sum of the braking energies of all individual classes (16):…”

“…Hybrid electric vehicles together form a key solution for increasing efficiency and lowering emissions and a viable strategy for developing countries> This is particularly so with the use of environmentally friendly, synthetic CO 2 -neutral fuels at an affordable price [13] or with the use of alternative fuels, such as LPG, which have significantly lower emissions and a lower CO 2 footprint [14]. Such power trains will certainly find their application in heavy trucks for long distances, special purpose vehicles or off-road and military vehicles [15,16]. The share of hybrid vehicles, with all levels of hybridization, from plug-in and full hybrid electric vehicles to mild hybrid vehicles, is predicted to be over 36% by 2030 [17].…”

“…Nowadays, power-split architectures on tractors are realized mainly through hydrostatic transmissions to change the power characteristics before recombining the power flows alongside the transmission. However, electric machines and modern power electronics can improve power-split configurations like the one described in Figure 6b [64][65][66][67][68]. The configuration may seem very similar to a series architecture.…”
