Application and Modification of Goda Formulae for Nonimpulsive Wave Forces on Elevated Coastal Structures

Abstract: With an increase in both the population densities in coastal communities and the frequency of high-intensity tropical cyclones in recent years, effective strategies to mitigate wave and surge-induced structural damage are essential to ensure community resilience. To prevent damage in vulnerable areas, structures must be constructed or retrofitted to withstand the wave and surge induced forces associated with extreme events. Accurately predicting the pressure distributions and forces caused by hurricane waves i… Show more

“…The researchers found that the maximum uplift pressures were observed when the mean water level was at the lowest horizontal member (Park et al, 2017(Park et al, , 2019. The data collected for this project has been used to develop new design equations proposed for the next cycle of the ASCE 7 standard in 2022 (Tomiczek et al, 2018(Tomiczek et al, , 2019a. The detailed observations of impact pressure under breaking, broken, and near breaking waves were compared with two high-resolution numerical models, OpenFOAM and Fluent, quantify uncertainties with respect to model schemes and grid resolution (Park et al, 2018a,b).…”
