Application fields for the new Object Management Group (OMG) Standards Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) and Decision Management Notation (DMN) in the perioperative field

Abstract: An effective modeling of the cataract intervention is possible using the combination of BPM and ACM. The combination gives the possibility to depict complex processes with complex decisions. This combination allows a significant advantage for modeling perioperative processes.

“…We used the BPMN model of cataract intervention [15] created with the Camunda Modeler 1 for a first user study. The BPMN model was built hierarchically and consisted of five phases, which are represented as tabs in the final view.…”

“…Other standards that are related to BPMN and complement it: Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) for managing unstructured activities and Decision Management Notation (DMN) for managing decisions [14]. A guideline on how to model surgical procedures based on those standards can be found in [15].…”

“…We use the OMG standards BPMN, CMMN and DMN to model medical processes. CMMN allows us to use adaptive case management (ACM) techniques [4] to handle complex situations, which might appear during an intervention [5].…”

“…As outlined in [16], the declarative process modeling approach can serve as a promising alternative paradigm for specifying event-driven IoT-based processes. Therefore, we will investigate and evaluate how IoT-aware processes can be defined, executed and analyzed by existing multi-perspective declarative process technology [46] or how other (declarative) standards like Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) [47,48] can be adjusted to be used in IoT scenarios. In addition, it is necessary to implement different concepts for a more efficient and secure communication between objects.…”
