Application of a Meshed Skin Graft in the Surgical Bed Immediately after Resection of Neurofibrosarcoma in the Distal Limb Region of a Dog

Abstract: Background: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are neurogenic neoplasms that originate from cells that surround the axons of peripheral nerves. Surgery is the treatment of choice for peripheral nerve sheath tumors. They have a better prognosis when the lesion is in the extremity of a limb and the surgeon leaves wide peripheral margins after resection. However, this procedure makes local treatment a challenge due to difficult wound healing in this region. This report describes a successful case involving … Show more

“…The observance of strict aseptic protocols during the grafting procedure and bandage change aided the prevention of graft wound infection in this study. This was also a core reason for the inclusion of 5-day post-grafting antibiotic therapy for all the groups [19,20,37,38].…”

“…Postoperative immobilisation is important to the graft healing process as it helps in reducing possible micro and macro movements that may disrupt the process of inosculation [7,41]. Incorporating casts and splints into dressing skin grafts of the limbs, especially around joints [37,41,45,46], the use of negative pressure bandaging [20,43,47,48] and complete cage rest have been suggested in literature to aid immobilisation. Patient hospitalisation post-skin grafting for the first few days, or until suture removal have also been advocated [6,7,43].…”
