Radon soil-gas concentrations and local seismicity: case of the Arax basin (Armenia). A survey of soil gas radon concentrations has been carried out at three sites, in the seismic area of Armenia, from 1996 to 1999. The seismicity generates opposed behaviours at the different sites. This heterogeneity is related to the sites locations in the tectonic frame. An increase of radon concentration occurs inside the tectonic micro-blocks during local seismic activity. On the contrary, an abrupt co-seismic decrease is recorded close to the fault area. These variations can be due to 'pore-collapse' phenomena which expulse the pore-gas and increases Rn concentration in soil at intra-blocs sites, but also to pore-elastic deformations and microfracturing modifications in the fault area. La crise sismique de fin 1998-début 1999 engendre des comportements opposés sur ces différents sites. Cette hétérogénéité semble être conditionnée par leurs positions par rapport au cadre tectonique et par les caractéristiques propres des séismes. Une augmentation du radon a été enregistrée dans des micro-blocs tectoniques. Dans la zone de faille, on observe au contraire une baisse pré et co-sismique saccadée de l'activité du radon. Ces variations pourraient s'expliquer par un mécanisme de type pore-collapse qui, en expulsant les gaz des pores, augmente leur concentration dans le sol sur les sites intra-blocs, mais aussi par des déformations poro-élastiques et des modifications de la microfracturation dans la zone de faille. Long-term radiometric and hydrological investigations at the Wettinquelle mineral spring in Bad Brambach demonstrated the existence of a fluidal connection to the currently most frequent earthquake-swarm hypocentre at Novy Kostel, 10 km east of Bad Brambach. The gas composition and δ 13 C CH4 values of this mineral spring were monitored from May 2000 until October 2003, i.e., before, during and after the protracted swarm earthquake period from late August until late December 2000. About eight weeks after the beginning of the seismically active period, we observed an increase in the methane concentration (from ≈40 up to ≈250 ppmv) accompanied by a decrease in the methane δ 13 C values from ≈-50 to ≈-70‰. For more than two years, such periods of variations were repeatedly observed before returning to the "baseline" signature. It is assumed that this additional methane was microbially produced in the granite-enclosed aquifer using H 2 , which was released (seismically triggered) from the fissured granite in which the Wettinquelle spring capture is located. The additional methane production might have started as a co-seismic event, with only the migration from the deep granite to the surface being responsible for the eight-week delay.

“…Since the 1960s, geochemical signals preceding significant earthquakes have been used for earthquake prediction, especially in China, Japan, the former Soviet Union, and the United States (KING, 1986;THOMAS, 1988). Gas monitoring on hydrothermal systems and fault zones has been prevailing because gas moves at a relatively high velocity within these areas (TAKAHATA et al, 1997;TOUTAIN and BAUBRON, 1999;WHITEHEAD and LYON, 1999;HEINICKE and KOCH, 2000). Gas variations of many mud volcanoes and hot springs distributed along the tectonic sutures in southwestern Taiwan are considered to be sensitive to the earthquake activity. Therefore, a multi-parameter automatic gas station was built on the bank of one of the largest mud-pools at an active fault zone of southwestern Taiwan, for continuous monitoring of CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 and H 2 O, the major constituents of its bubbling gases. During the year round monitoring from October 2001 to October 2002, the gas composition, especially, CH 4 and CO 2 , of the mud pool showed significant variations. Taking the CO 2 /CH 4 ratio as the main indicator, anomalous variations can be recognized from a few days to a few weeks before earthquakes and correlated well with those with a local magnitude >4.0 and local intensities >2. It is concluded that the gas composition in the area is sensitive to the local crustal stress/ strain and is worthy to conduct real-time monitoring for the seismo-geochemical precursors.
