Application of an Eddy Current-Tuned Mass Damper to Vibration Mitigation of Offshore Wind Turbines

Abstract: Offshore wind turbine (OWT) structures are highly sensitive to complex ambient excitations, especially extreme winds. To mitigate the vibrations of OWT structures under windstorm or typhoon conditions, a new eddy current with tuned mass damper (EC-TMD) system that combines the advantages of the eddy current damper and the tuned mass damper is proposed to install at the top of them. In the present study, the electromagnetic theory is applied to estimate the damping feature of the eddy current within the EC-TMD … Show more

“…From the application of the outlined procedure to a case study, a reduction of over 20% of the response peaks for high wind velocities in the FA direction was noticed, which is consistent with the response reduction provided by other semi-active PTMD vibration control systems found in literature, 51 but in the device proposed here, there is the advantage of not requiring electric power in operation.…”

“…9-(d)). With the distance matrix known, the persistence diagram is obtained as described in Section 3.2, which summarizes the loops as 1-D features with lifetimes of [12,8,8,1,1]. Additionally, a histogram is used to show the lifetime multiplicity, i.e., how many points are overlaid in each location of the persistence diagram.…”

“…This physical system provides rich, non-linear dynamics over a wide range of parameter values and demonstrates both periodic and chaotic dynamics. Further, it ties in with other applications where similar systems are used such as as energy harvesting [2,11] and mass dampers [12].…”

“…The latter is also an issue for alternative realizations of TMDs rather than the use of elastic forces to control the structure's vibrations (e.g., tuned rolling ball [126]). Nevertheless, recent work on structural vibration control is focused on overcoming these issues, such as the development of tuned mass eddy current dampers [127], for which initial work has shown promising results.…”
