The aim of this study was to investigate human dental enamel surfaces using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques concerning differences between the demineralized enamel surface and remineralized enamel surface by casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate, Tooth mousse ® (CPP-ACP) and remineralizing oral care systems (ROCS ® ) agents within the same tooth.For this purpose, 20 freshly extracted human maxillary central incisors without caries and defects were used. Labial surfaces of each of the teeth were divided into four sections, which were marked as follows: Group 1, normal enamel; Group 2, demineralized enamel with demineralization solution; Group 3, demineralized enamel + remineralization agent (ROCS for 10 teeth, CPP-ACP for 10 teeth); and Group 4, remineralization agent (ROCS for 10 teeth, CPP-ACP for 10 teeth). To describe the changes in tooth enamel, the phosphate group concentration within enamel was used as an indicator of the degree of mineralization. The phosphate and carbonate bands in the FTIR and Raman spectra were used to investigate the structural changes in the demineralized and remineralized enamel. Spectroscopic data were statistically analyzed in terms of CPP-ACP and ROCS using one-way analysis of variance. The carbonate content of demineralized enamel was higher than the carbonate content in the other groups (p < .03). The apatite carbonate-phosphate balance in the samples with only remineralizing agent-especially ROCS appliedchanged significantly (p < .05) compared to the normal group. The average FTIR spectra of the groups were subjected to multivariate hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) conducted with the use of the OPUS 5.5 software. Nanosized surface morphologies of the samples were compared using pair distance distributions obtained through SAXS analyses. According to the SAXS analyses, applications of CCP + ACP and ROCS agents were effective on nanostructures for all groups.

Infant formulas contain nutrients and bioactive ingredients designed to meet the nutrition requirements of infants. The majority of infant formulas are cow's milk (CM) based regular ones. Since CM is one of the most important allergen source, there are specialized formulas such as partially and extensively hydrolyzed, aminoacid‐based for CM‐allergic infants. In the current study, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in combination with multivariate analysis was used to identify the molecular differences between commercially available hypoallergenic (HF) and regular formulas (RF) in Turkey. Higher saturated fatty acid (FA) content and qualitatively longer acyl chained FAs were observed in hypoallergenic formulations. The results of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there were differences between the infrared spectra of the two groups. The HF and RF samples were clearly separated from each other in 1200-800 cm-1 spectral region with 83% variation and 100% accuracy.

Strategies involving the synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAP) are significant in health and materials sciences, and lately, in heritage science. Conditions for the optimized heterogeneous formation of HAP for consolidating bone are investigated using a simple methodology with discs of calcium-containing starting materials and phosphate-containing reagent solutions; the results were evaluated against whole bone specimens. Diammonium phosphate (DAP) solutions with simulated body fluid (SBF) and gelatin as cofactors in all combinations were used in trials, while the products were characterized by microscopy, elemental microanalysis, X-Ray diffractometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The hypothesis that bone, SBF, and gelatin may biomimetically promote HAP formation was tested through a simple experimental design. The results showed that HAP is generally formed in mixtures with octacalcium phosphate (OCP), as well as calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (brushite). The precipitation of carbonate HAP signals the formation of a biocompatible product in the cases where SBF and gelatin were employed as cofactors. Gelatin was found to further promote the product formation in most cases. It was shown that DAP, as well as its combination with gelatin, could predominantly form HAP in most trials, while OCP is co-crystallized in SBF-containing solutions.
