Application of biomass for the production of energy in the Portuguese textile industry

Abstract: The use of biomass as energy source becomes considered again as a possibility, after a period in which practically felt in disuse, especially in industrial environments. Nowadays is becoming again an alternative, mainly due to the increasing prices of fossil fuels, especially oil and natural gas, as well as by the growing environmental and sustainability concerns, since the biomass fuel is considered neutral in terms of CO 2 emissions. The use of biomass as solid fuel presents logistic difficulties, which do n… Show more

“…Due to their large thermal energy needs, they are looking for cheaper and more sustainable forms of energy. This group includes textile dyeing plants, which are very important for the Portuguese economy [20,21]. An example of a biomass system adapted to an industrial steam boiler located in a textile dyeing company in north Portugal is presented in Fig.…”

“…The major industrial units and organizations are all situated in and around the proximate regions of Vale do Cávado and Vale do Ave, located in the north of Portugal. Thus, for this paper, these industrial units were selected, specifically in the municipalities of Barcelos, Famalicão and Fafe, and the city of Guimarães, which are the areas were the Portuguese textile industry is mostly concentrated and which have been operating for more than 150 years [27,38].…”

“…However, it is not easy to distinguish between domestic and industrial consumption, since tracking the type of consumption after sale becomes challenging. For example, Nunes et al [54,[56][57][58][59] presented and characterized some of the uses of biomass-derived fuels in the textile industry. Given the growth that has been seen in the installation of sizeable thermal conversion equipment, namely steam boilers, in many industrial sectors, it is likely that national consumption will shift towards the industrial sector.…”
