The HPO Solver software tool combines biological, engineering and cost models used in wastewater treatment to assist the user in making design and economic decisions. A unique feature of this steady-state tool is a model that calculates biological heat, an important design consideration when treating high strength waste. Three industrial case studies are presented : a leachate plant, a pharmaceutical plant and a tank washing facility producing chemical waste. Results of the biological heat model are presented as well as output of the cost model which has the capability to provide rough estimates of capital and operating costs for refrigeration. In the case of the leachate plant, the model predicts underestimated capital costs of 11% and operating costs of 6% when neglecting biological heat.
