Application of Chemometrics Tools to the Study of the Fe(III)–Tannic Acid Interaction

Abstract: Chemometric techniques were applied to the study of the interaction of iron(III) and tannic acid (TA). Modeling the interaction of Fe(III)–TA is a challenge, as can be the modeling of the metal complexation upon natural macromolecules without a well-defined molecular structure. The chemical formula for commercial TA is often given as C76H52O46, but in fact, it is a mixture of polygalloyl glucoses or polygalloyl quinic acid esters with the number of galloyl moieties per molecule ranging from 2 up to 12. Therefo… Show more

“…23 However, their potential in addressing the removal or control of the predominant metal ion, Fe( ii / iii ), remains relatively unexplored. 24 Instead, iron ions act either as oxidants for polyphenolic molecules, or vice versa , with polyphenols reducing Fe( iii ) to Fe( ii ), 25 or as coordinating metals to establish a thin metal–organic layer, 26 as illustrated in Fig. 2a.…”

“…Chemometric methods of the isolation of the spectra of a mixture components are widely used in spectroscopic studies [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. However, three-way methods of spectral analysis (such as Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC)) [32,33] are rarely employed in studies using FTIR spectroscopy [34,35].…”
