Application of Chitosan and Activated Carbon Nano-composite in Removal of Nitrite, Phosphate, and Ammonia From Aquaculture Wastewater

Abstract: Developing an adsorbent with natural components is one of the effective methods to reduce the amount of wastewater pollutants. Wastewater reuse can improve the quality of water prior to entering the natural environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of chitosan nano-composite and activated carbon adsorbent in the removal of nitrite, phosphate, and ammonia pollutants from fish farms of Aq-Qala. To prepare the adsorbents, the shrimp shells were converted to nano-chitosan. The date … Show more

“…A rise in adsorption efficacy was found, with a rise in temperature and a reduction in pH. The pH of 1, at 50 °C, with a starting dye concentration of 50 mg l −1 and adsorbent amounts of 1500 mg l −1 , was found to have the best adsorption [75].…”

“…The results of research by Kim et al, showed that BS mainly promotes the decomposition of harmful substances in sediment or improves the micro ora of water body by producing a variety of enzymes, achieving the purpose of improving water quality (Kim et al). As a good biodegradability, chitosan can absorb many harmful substances, which is the great signi cance in promoting the decomposition of harmful substances in water (Rezaei et al, 2019). In this study, KMPS, THPS, BS and CS could reduce the increasing rate of ammonia nitrogen, PH, nitrite, active phosphate, total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the decreasing rate of dissolved oxygen (DO) content in GIFT tilapia growing environment, especially the effect of BS or CS is more signi cant.…”

“…However, toxic shock, pH changes, low dissolved oxygen, and cold temperatures in the winter can all impede this approach [ 12 ]. One of the most effective ways to decrease the amount of aquaculture wastewater contaminants is to develop an adsorbent that is a natural component [ 13 ].…”
