Application of Cloud Point Extraction for Copper, Nickel, Zinc and Iron Ions in Environmental Samples

Abstract: A cloud point extraction procedure was presented for the preconcentration of copper, nickel, zinc and iron ions in various samples. After complexation by 2-(6-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl)-1Hbenzo[d]Imidazole (BIYPYBI), analyte ions are quantitatively extracted in Triton X-114 following centrifugation. 1.0 mol L -1 HNO 3 nitric acid in methanol was added to the surfactant-rich phase prior to its analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The adopted concentrations for BIYPYBI, Triton X-… Show more

“…The absorption spectrum of HCPTS in DMF showed a band at 35 H signal appears in the aromatic region confirming an intramolecular H-bond. The other NH protons are shifted up field due to the inductive effect of pyridyl and phenyl rings as electron donor groups [29].…”

“…This indicates that the extraction using the proposed procedure is quantitative for all metal ions. Furthermore, the determination of Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Pb(II), Fe(II), and Hg(II) by the proposed method was compared with other CPE-AAS or CPE-ICP methods [12,15,[34][35][36][37][38] and the results are summarized in Table 4. As it can be seen the proposed method has higher preconcentration factor and lower LOD.…”

“…There are different techniques for preconcentration such as co precipitation [1], electrode deposition, liquid-liquid extraction [2], freezing based concentration method, carbon adsorption, distillation, sublimation, evaporation, membrane filtration [3], cloud point extraction [4] and solid phase extractor (SPE) like chelating resins have been used [5]. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is one of the pre-treatment methods for the preconcentration of trace analytes from a sample.…”

“…Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy is a versatile, simple and high speed instrument for direct determination of metal ions, [20][21][22][23][24][25] but its use in indirect determination of nonmetallic anions and drugs is limited. [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33] To the best of our knowledge there is no report on the use of FAAS for indirect determination of sulphonamides drugs. In the present paper, an indirect simple, sensitive and precise cloud point extraction for separation and preconcentration of sulfadiazine as silver sulfadiazine followed by its determination by FIA-FAAS is described.…”
