Application of cone-beam computed tomography in the analysis and management of intricate internal anatomy of hyper- and mesotaurodontic teeth

Abstract: Developmental anomalies are marked deviations from normal size, shape, contour, and various other parameters. An understanding of these anomalies and its application has been a clinical challenge. With the advances in diagnostic technology, the field of endodontics has been evolving with new treatment protocols, which gives promising results. The aim of this article is to present a case report on tooth anomaly that is taurodontism and its management in a patient with multiple taurodont teeth. This article brin… Show more

“…The endodontic treatment of taurodont teeth is complex and difficult because of the apical displacements of the pulpal chamber floor, which makes it harder to find the localization of the root canals. 5,6,11,15,16 Taurodont teeth often have an incorrect configuration of the root canal system and additional canals (Fig. 2,3).…”

“…11 Most of the authors of the analyzed publications agree that the occurrence of this defect is related to ethnicity. 2,3,[5][6][7]9,10,16 For example, this anomaly has been reported in up to 46% of young Chinese people. 3,10 Even using panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the occurrence of this anomaly, especially its milder forms (hypotaurodontism), can be overlooked.…”

“…During the analysis, it is also important to pay attention to anatomical features of the molars that may indicate the presence of taurodontism in a diagnosed patient. Although taurodont teeth are clinically no different from cynodont teeth, they can cause difficulties during endodontic treatment due to the apical displacement of the pulp chamber floor, which significantly obstructs the localization of root canal openings (3,9,12,13,14). Due to the elongated shape of the pulp chamber, the initial diagnosis itself can be Prace przeglądowe / Review article w trakcie analizy zwrócić również uwagę na cechy anatomiczne zębów trzonowych, mogące wskazywać na występowanie taurodontyzmu u diagnozowanego pacjenta.…”
