Application of constitutive models in European codes to RC–FRC

Abstract: The recent publication of codes for the design of FRC is a major step towards extending the use of the material. An in depth analysis indicates several differences between the constitutive models proposed in the existing codes. In this study, these models are compared and a numerical simulation is performed to evaluate their differences in terms of the structural behavior predicted and measured in an experimental program of RC-FRC elements. The predictions provided by the models fit satisfactorily the experime… Show more

“…As mentioned before, several authors indicate that the CV measured in the tensile residual response of real scale or larger elements is between 2% and 10% [5,6,11,12]. This range is considerably below the considered for the bending test that commonly shows CV between 10% and 30% [2,10].…”

“…As an example, Figure 1 presents the average scatter in the residual strength measured in the bending test EN 14651 by different authors from the literature for crack mouth opening displacements of 0.5 mm (f R,1 ), 1.5 mm (f R,2 ), 2.5 mm (f R,3 ) and 3.5 mm (f R,4 ) [1][2][3][4]. Notice that the CV is on the average 15%, which is considerably higher than the observed in the compressive and the tensile strength tests of concrete.…”

“…More recently, recommendations about the design of FRC structures were also included in the MC 2010 [10], with constitutive equations [11][12] and models for the Service Limit State and Ultimate Limit State (SLS and the ULS, respectively). An increase in the use of FRC in tunnels segments has been observed as a result of that [13].…”
