Application of FBG Sensing Technology in Stability Analysis of Geogrid-Reinforced Slope

Abstract: By installing FBG sensors on the geogrids, smart geogrids can both reinforce and monitor the stability for geogrid-reinforced slopes. In this paper, a geogrid-reinforced sand slope model test was conducted in the laboratory and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology is used to measure the strain distribution of the geogrid. Based on the model test, the performance of the reinforced soil slope is simulated by finite element software Midas-GTS, and the stability of the reinforced soil slope is analyzed by … Show more

“…The combination of FOSs and geogrids for the strengthening of geotechnical structures e.g., [ 91 , 92 , 93 ] or FOSs and reinforcing composite patches based on either fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs) [ 94 ] or Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) [ 95 ], for the rehabilitation of concrete structures, have been already explored in the literature. However, the integration of optical fiber sensors in TRC is still in the early stages of development, and thus, there is no sufficient literature available to compare their performance, structurally or in terms of efficiency and economy.…”

“…FBG sensing technology is mainly used to reflect external deformation information by detecting changes in the central wavelength of the sensor, which can be used to measure temperature, strain, displacement and pressure [34,35]. The bare FBG sensor is fragile and usually needs to be fixed on a specific carrier [36][37][38]. Wang et al [4] proposed a detection device combining FBG and PVC pipe, Xu et al [39] proposed a soft FBG strain sensor composed of rubber strip, FBG, and steel plate.…”

“…Among them, numerical simulation technology can intuitively analyze the failure mechanism inside the rock and soil and is widely used in slope stability analysis. For example, Sun et al used the finite element software Midas-GTS to simulate the performance of reinforced soil slopes, and they compared the numerical simulation results with monitoring data to verify that numerical simulation techniques can reliably analyze geogridreinforced slopes [4,5]. Zhang et al took the actual engineering of geogrid reinforcement of the slope as an example, analyzed the stability of the slope, and optimized the geogrid reinforcement scheme [6,7].…”
