Application of Fiber Bragg Grating Acoustic Emission Sensors in Thin Polymer-Bonded Explosives

Abstract: Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) acoustic emission (AE) sensors have been used in many applications. In this paper, based on an FBG AE sensor, the sensing principle of the interaction between the AE wave and the sensor is introduced. Then, the directionality of the FBG AE sensor on the surface of a thin polymer-bonded explosive (PBX) material is studied. Finally, the time coefficient location method is proposed to correct the AE time detected by the FBG AE sensor, thereby improving the accuracy of location experiment… Show more

“…In [ 13 , 14 , 15 ], FBG sensors with high sensitivity over broad bandwidths were proposed for AE detection in composite plates. AE generated by crack formation in an aluminum panel was investigated through a FBG-based sensor in [ 16 ], while in [ 17 ], the performances of a FBG AE sensor on the surface of a thin polymer-bonded explosive (PBX) material were analyzed.…”

“…Giurgiutiu directly embedded fiber gratings into aerospace composite materials for monitoring their structural health [14], however, embedding the sensors complicates the composite manufacturing, and the monitoring strategy must be foreseen before the manufacturing process. Chen Ru et al used FBG to monitor the stress and strain in AM process in real time [15]; Liu et al used the phase shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) to monitor composite materials for long-term use [16]; Tao et al directly used the FBG acoustic emission sensor to monitor the health conditions of the polymer-bonded explosive (PBX) cracks in the narrow space of polymer explosives [17]; Manterola et al used FBG as the AE sensor to treat the cracks that appeared at the structural rigid bonding head for a long time [18]; Leitao et al developed FBG intensity sensors and the sensor was successfully used in the monitoring of central arterial pressure changes over a long period of time [19].…”
