Application of flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy in the removal of adult airway foreign bodies

Abstract: Background Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a rapid, cost effective and safe procedure. Aim To analyze demographic information and endoscopic findings in adult patients with airway foreign body aspiration and its removal. Methods Fifty-seven adults (40 males, 17 females; average age 40 years old) with airway foreign body aspiration were analyzed. Cough (37, 65%) was the most common clinical presentation. The most common foreign body was bo… Show more

“…Providing teams with resources and the latest technology to connect virtually will help in knowledge sharing across the specialties more effectively and benefit a larger patient population. Ardila et al recently proposed a deep learning algorithm that uses a patient's current and prior CT volumes to predict the risk of to remove distally located FB in adults and children (52,56,58,59). In our current practice, scarf pins are a common inhaled FB particularly in young and middle-aged females who wears headscarves due to religious or traditional causes.…”

“…Medical and dental practitioners should be aware of the potential, albeit rare, for foreign body aspiration during dental procedures. Risk factors for aspiration in adults include an altered level of consciousness, cerebrovascular disease, and dental procedures [ 3 , 6 ]. During dental procedures an additional risk factor for aspiration is performing the procedure in a supine position [ 7 ].…”

“…During dental procedures an additional risk factor for aspiration is performing the procedure in a supine position [ 7 ]. Prompt intervention may prevent complications such as post obstructive pneumonia and hemoptysis [ 6 ]. Mortality is rare but has been reported [ 8 ].…”

“…Complications of tracheobronchial aspiration of FBs include pneumomediastinum, hydropneumothorax, lung abscess, pneumonia, bronchial stenosis, and pneumothorax [ 4 ]. These complications occur due to lung mucosal inflammation, granulation tissue formation, and tissue injury [ 5 ]. Here, we present a case of an unknown tracheobronchial aspiration of a small plastic coil from an electronic cigarette, resulting in hydropneumothorax and severe acute respiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).…”
