Application of fractionated bleached pulp fibres on sodium alginate films

Abstract: Bleached NBSK (Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft) pulp was fractionated using a pilot pressure screen. Then the fractionated fibres were characterized using a Fibre Quality Analyzer (FQA) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It was found that the mean fibre length and width significantly decreased after fractionation. Aspect ratio (length divided by width) of the fractionated fibres was lower than NBSK fibres. The SEM analysis indicated that the diameter of the NBSK fibres was in the range of 100 to 200 μm, … Show more

“…According to Tay et al (2010), soda pulp from EFB fiber shows a low probability to agglomerate, a high aspect ratio, and better distribution when incorporated into polypropylene matrices. Khan et al (2016) also verified the enhancement of thin film mechanical properties when fractionated bleached pulp fibers are reinforced into a biodegradable polymer (alginate) matrix.…”

“…After subtracting the cellulose and hemicellulose from the carbohydrate content of the 9 preparations, each group contained approximately 20% water-soluble polysaccharide in the algal pulp. The influence of water-soluble polysaccharides in the process of papermaking remains unclear; however, adding brown algal water-soluble polysaccharides to the wood pulp might increase the mechanical properties of the resulting paper [ 36 ].…”
