Application of geographic information system (GIS) in analyzing geospatial information of academic library databases

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the application of geographic information systems as a decision support system in analyzing geospatial data in the databases of an academic library.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, after separation, the data on control, classification and coding of the geospatial information existing in an academic library's databases were entered into a geographic information system. Then, using the ArcGIS software and its program (ArcMap), the data were shown, described… Show more

“…Since then, skills in this area (Vardakosta et al , 2016) have been systematically developed. Librarians use GIS to collect, manage, preserve, access and analyze digital data and resources (Argentati, 1997; Ancona et al , 2004; Sedighi, 2012). They develop geospatial collections and explore their efficient use as required by the current information environment (Vardakosta and Kapidakis, 2016).…”

“…By using the analysis functions of the system, a range of features could be indicated; for example, the spatial relationships of data based on the educational course can be analyzed. 8 Boda used a 3D virtuallibrary model to represent the most prominent and celebrated collection of classical antiquity in the Alexandria library. 9 Beyond the applications mentioned above, some libraries have used GIS techniques to analyze reader behaviors.…”

“…GIS supports the analysis of huge data and a large quantity of information coming from a variety of sources [27]. The data in GIS is divided into attribute and spatial data which is regarded as the main function of GIS [28]. GIS provides a convenient way for data analysis to integrate large, spatially referenced data concerning various geographical aspects in the spatial database [29].…”
