Application of Graphene Nanoplatelets in Supercapacitor Devices: A Review of Recent Developments

Abstract: As worldwide energy consumption continues to increase, so too does the demand for improved energy storage technologies. Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that are receiving considerable interest due to their appealing features such as high power densities and much longer cycle lives than batteries. As such, supercapacitors fill the gaps between conventional capacitors and batteries, which are characterised by high power density and high energy density, respectively. Carbon nanomaterials, such as graph… Show more

“…Decarbonization is a major challenge for the global society [1][2][3]. While we have significantly reduced energy consumption in household and industrial electrical devices over the past decade, the electricity demand continues to grow due to the increasing use of electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and visual information devices [4][5][6][7]. Additionally, the lifespan of handheld devices is decreasing, and augmented and virtual reality devices are becoming more prevalent [8,9].…”

“…Graphene has been used as an electrode material in supercapacitors [12,13], showing a promising increase in energy density while maintaining a long cycle life [14]. In addition, graphene is a potential material to reduce the cost of supercapacitor production and open the opportunity for selfcharging supercapacitors [15].…”
