Application of green tea extracts epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate in dental materials: Recent progress and perspectives

Abstract: Because of excellent biocompatibility, antioxidant activity, and anti-caries ability, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been widely studied in the treatment of oral diseases, such as periodontal disease, oral cancer, and dental caries. To reach the site of the lesion or achieve sustained release, play the role of anti-caries, anti-inflammatory, or to maintain or improve the physical properties of the modified material, EGCG need to be cross-linked or embedded with dental adhesives, barrier membranes, bone … Show more

“…70 In several studies, polyphenols from green tea extracts, particularly EGCG and ECG, were effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clostridium botulinum, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. 23,25,70,77 They damaged the cell membrane affecting the regulation of peptidoglycan biosynthesis and generating an alteration in the structure of the cell wall. 70 Lower concentrations of EGCG and ECG are necessary to exert effects on Gram-positive bacteria than on Gram-negative.…”

“…Effects on dermatological health and antiallergic effect Several studies have described the beneficial properties of green tea extracts on dermatological health. 25,77,83 Green tea is effective in treating acne due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. 83 In a recent meta-analysis, the topical application of green tea extract significantly reduced the number of inflammatory lesions, while oral intake showed a slight effect thanks to its antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties.…”
