“…The emerging diagnostic applications of FTIR spectroscopy are growing as the field matures and it has been applied successfully to the study of breast cancer 17 , lung cancer 26 , ovarian cancer 27 , brain tumors 28 , cervical cancer 29 , gastric cancer 30 , colon cancer 31 , prostate cancer 32 . The preliminary results of FTIR spectroscopy application in diagnostics of a bone tumour have been reported in our previous studies 15 , 24 emphasizing the applicability of FTIR to all tissue types.…”

“…In our previous, preliminary study 24 we postulated that the shift of the maximum absorbance peak in the range 1100 cm −1 –900 cm −1 , which was related to chemotherapy response, is dependent on signals derived from the phosphate group in the sample. Presently, based on the greater results of the spectral analysis presented herein, we have to revise this conclusion and state that it is impossible to unequivocally attribute this peak only to one chemical structure as the vibrations of different molecular components of a cell overlap and the spectrum thus reflects the average biochemical composition 13 .…”

“…We have previously shown that the peak absorbance maxima in the bio-fingerprinting region (1000–1100 cm −1 ) of FTIR spectra of Ewing sarcoma bone sections can be predictive of patient outcome. [21,22] Following on from this, we considered whether treatment outcome might be better predicted by the analysis of the whole FTIR spectra. Herein we report a small-cohort retrospective study into the prognostic value of the whole spectrum obtained from ES tumours before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy administration in combination with data-reduction and machine learning approaches.…”

“…In addition to this clinical utility, FTIR spectroscopy is rapid, inexpensive and straightforward to perform. The FTIR features of Ewing sarcoma infected bone tissue have been previously reported 8 , however to-date no study has reported the FTIR spectroscopic features of osteomyelitis nor compared those with Ewing Sarcoma to determine whether they differ.…”
