Application of intensified Fenton oxidation to the treatment of hospital wastewater: Kinetics, ecotoxicity and disinfection

Abstract: Fenton oxidation has proved to be effective for the treatment of a real hospital wastewater. The intensification of the process viz. the improvement on the efficiency of H2O2consumption, by increasing the temperature, is necessary to operate in a single step and avoid high reaction times and the need of large H2O2 and iron concentrations. This approach would allow taking advantage of the heat energy contained in the laundry stream since the washing process is performed at high temperature to assure disinfectio… Show more

“…For instance, heterogeneous photocatalysis using TiO2 has been widely investigated [7][8][9] accompanied by research efforts such as composite semiconductors and surface sensitization [10] to improve catalytic performance. Another approach is using heterogeneous Fentonlike catalysts such as iron oxides [11][12][13], which produce powerful oxidative radicals when contacted with peroxides [14,15]. However, iron oxides are unstable [16] due to the oxidation of the active phase Fe 2+ to Fe 3+ and research effort has been focused on improving long term stability by compositing iron oxide with graphene oxide [17] as an example.…”

“…When a waterbody containing antibiotics flows to agriculture land, this could affect the maturity of plants [4]. One of the main sources of pharmaceutical effluents is hospitals which, in Europe, typically discharges pharmaceutical components in the range concentrations of 0.2-11 µg L −1 [5]. This could be even worse in other countries when using improper wastewater treatment, resulting in a higher concentration of pharmaceutical substances released to the environment.…”

“…It has been pointed out that these physical methods merely transfer contaminants from one environment to another without destroying contaminants. Examples of chemical methods used in hospital sewage treatment are fenton oxidation [60], Multi-Stage Ozone Injection [21], and ozonation/H 2 O 2 , UV photolysis/H 2 O 2 , photo-Fenton [7]. These ways are quite costly and are not ecofriendly due to involvement of harmful chemicals.…”
