Application of Lean Six Sigma for yield improvement in the stainless steel industry: a recipe from Türkiye

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to demonstrate the application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) at a stainless steel manufacturer in Türkiye for yield improvement. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach consisting of a single descriptive case study was adopted. Both primary and secondary sources were used. The interviews were conducted with the Six Sigma team. In addition, an in-depth review of the project documents was conducted. The “define, measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC)” phases were explained b… Show more

“…It was proved that these methodologies have an essential role in process improvement (Escobar et al, 2022;Uluskan and Kars ı, 2022). DMAIC refers to the methodology steps (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) for process improvement (Ahmed et al, 2023;Bilgin Turna, 2023;Liu et al, 2023). Gross et al (2019) conducted a systematic literature review on the BPIMs literature.…”

“…6σ uses the DMAIC methodology for process improvement (Adrita et al , 2021). DMAIC is a methodology used for improvement projects with 6σ (Ahmed et al , 2023; Liu et al , 2023; Purushothaman and Ahmad, 2022; Ren et al , 2022; Uluskan and Karşı, 2022) and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) (Bilgin Turna, 2023; Kaswan et al , 2023; Rathi et al , 2022; Singh et al , 2023; Şişman, 2022; Trubetskaya et al , 2023). However, DMAIC method can be used as a standalone methodology (Rodriguez Delgadillo et al , 2022; Tufail et al , 2022).…”

“…The six-sigma improvement method was initiated by Motorola in 1986 [1][2][3][4]. The sixsigma DMAIC process means that the industry follows (1) define, (2) measure, (3) analyze, (4) improve, and (5) control to make improvements on the workflow of process quality [5][6][7]. The six-sigma method has been actively promoted by numerous companies, including General Electric Company in America, American Ford Motor Company in America, and Asustek Computer Incorporation in Taiwan.…”
