Application of Linear Discriminant Analysis and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy for Diagnosis of Colon Cancer

Abstract: Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) microspectroscopy was applied for detection of colon cancer according to the spectral features of colon tissues. Supervised classification models can be trained to identify the tissue type based on the spectroscopic fingerprint. A total of 78 colon tissues were used in spectroscopy studies. Major spectral differences were observed in 1,740-900 cm(-1) spectral region. Several chemometric methods such as analysis of variance (ANOVA), cluster anal… Show more

“…In order to assess subtle changes that may occur in tumor molecular assembly depending on whether host animals do express lumican or not, an innovative method relying on unsupervised K -means clustering of FT-IR spectral images was then used 33 , 34 . Second derivative spectra obtained from s.c. melanoma allografts were partitioned into 9 clusters being representative of tissue biochemical properties 34 , 35 (Fig. 5a and b ).…”

“…50 It aims to maximize the ratio of between-class variance to within-class variance. [51][52][53][54] A five-class LDA model was chosen. Four classes assigned to specific tissue structures (i.e., [1] normal glomeruli and tubular sections, [2] constitutive collagen, [3] fibrosis, and [4] inflammation) were retained.…”

“…Numerous diseases have already been detected by applying FTIR in serum and plasma samples such as rheumatoid arthritis (LECHOWICZ et al, 2016), heart disease (HAAS et al, 2010), dyslipidemia (SATO et al, 2010), leukemia (SHENG et al, 2013 and bladder (OLLESCH et al, 2014), ovary (GAJJAR et al, 2013OWENS et al, 2014) and lung cancer (KAZNOWSKA et al, 2018). In CRC cases, the investigations have focused on the discrimination of malignant tissues from healthy tissues using preponderantly solid biopsies through the FTIR microspectroscopy technique (ARGOV et al, 2002;KAZNOWSKA et al, 2017;KHANMOHAMMADI et al, 2009;KHANMOHAMMADI et al, 2011;LI, Q.-B. et al, 2005;LI, X. et al, 2012;RAMESH et al, 2001;SALMAN;MORDECHAI, 2017;SALMAN et al, 2001).…”
