Application of Mode Matching Method to Analysis of Axisymmetric Coaxial Discontinuity Structures Used in Permeability and/or Permittivity Measurement

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a mode matching method to analyze axisymmetric coaxial discontinuity structures, commonly used in the permeability and/or permittivity measurement. By performing the mode matching procedures at all discontinuity interfaces, a set of general simultaneous equations are derived, which can be easily solved. The s parameters and field distribution in the structures are readily obtained from the solution to the simultaneous equations. As a preliminary preparation for the mode matching me… Show more

“…Since the structure is uniform along the y direction, only transverse magnetic (TM) modes are excited on the discontinuity interface for the transverse electric and magnetic (TEM) wave excitation. The two kinds of discontinuities can be analyzed based on the mode matching method by following the similar analysis procedure presented in [17]. The equations as below can be obtained for the discontinuity in Fig.…”

“…Also, described detailed compensation process is similar to the method presented in [13]. A coaxial measurement cell usually consists of specially shaped composite geometry partially filled with material sample [14][15][16]. Coaxial discontinuity structures are widely used as an element of microwave devices and commonly used in the permeability and/or permittivity measurement for materials [17].…”

“…On the other hand, to search the best combination of the slots and wall sections, a multiparameters optimization method has to be used. So in this paper mode matching method (MMM) [1,2] and the simulated annealing method (SAM) [3] are combined to design and optimize the NWSDC. Though MMM is efficient for designing the NWSDC, it is difficult to design the DLWPS using this method if the loaded dielectric block is irregular, so edge based finite element method (EBFEM) [4] is used to design and analyze the DLWPS.…”
