Application of Myrmecodia Pendans Extract as a Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in 3.5% NaCl Solution

Abstract: The use of Myrmecodia Pendans (MP) extract as mild steel corrosion inhibitor in 3.5% NaCl media was investigated using weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods as well as characteristics analysis of the Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). Obtained data from weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods has shown the value of inhibition efficiency (% IE) is proportional toadded inhibitor concentration. Tafel constants data indicates that MP extract can act as cathodic and anodic inhibitors (t… Show more

“…For the weight loss experiment, the specimen is formed as a coupon with dimension of 20 x 20 x 3 mm. Before the immersion, the specimen surface is smoothed by using the rubbing the paper so that the specimen surface is free from corrosion product which is flat and smooth [7]. …”

“…Therefore, organic inhibitors are preferred as an alternative for corrosion inhibitors due to their wide availability, low cost of production, and environmental friendliness. Sarang semut is one of many local natural ingredients that appear to have excellent potential as an organic inhibitor adding an extract of this substance into a solution of NaCl at 3.5% showed inhibition efficiency of about 90% (Pradityana et al, 2014;Pradityana et al, 2016). Sarang semut, widely known as Myrmecodia pendans, is an epiphytic plant that grows naturally in Papua.…”
