Application of natural and synthetic polyamines as growth regulators to improve the freezing tolerance of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract: Wheat cultivars were grown as soil culture under normal growth conditions. Twoweek-old seedlings were exposed to 4°C for 6 h and then transferred to -12°C for 24 h in the dark. Twenty-four hours before freezing stress, some of the plants were sprayed with aqueous solutions of spermine, spermidine, putrescine, 1,3-diaminopropane (1,3-DAP) and diethylenetriamine (DETA). The data showed that freezing stress caused a decrease in the fresh weight, chlorophyll content and plant survival rate, accompanied by a simult… Show more

“…Possibly Spm application has a beneficial role for proline accumulation related to easier adaptation to UVc. likewise, preliminarily Spm application to wheat caused proline accumulation, which facilitated plants to survive after subsequent freezing stress (28). Glutathione is the most abundant low-molecular thiolcontaining compound in living cells, which plays defence roles in ROS detoxification (7,8).…”

“…The effectiveness of the antioxidant defense systems could be enhanced by application of compounds possessing different chemical natures or physiological modes of action. Applied in low doses, these substances could activate cell metabolism, improve plant physiological processes, and increase plant resistance to various unfavorable stress factors (Park et al, 2006;Todorova et al, 2008;Habibi, 2012;Kabiri et al, 2012;Pandey et al, 2012;Todorova et al, 2012).…”
