Application of new biotechnologies for improvements in swine nutrition and pork production

Abstract: Meeting the increasing demands for high-quality pork protein requires not only improved diets but also biotechnology-based breeding to generate swine with desired production traits. Biotechnology can be classified as the cloning of animals with identical genetic composition or genetic engineering (via recombinant DNA technology and gene editing) to produce genetically modified animals or microorganisms. Cloning helps to conserve species and breeds, particularly those with excellent biological and economical tr… Show more

“…However, genetic manipulation of rumen microbiota is also possible through different techniques as host genetics influences some heritable microbial traits (81)(82)(83). In this regard, recent biological techniques such as transgenesis are getting attention for improving the efficiency of animal production and reducing environmental impacts (84). New genome editing tools provide an efficient way to produce gene-edited ruminants, having resistance against certain diseases and specific product quality (85).…”

“…However, both ZFN and TALEN are modular proteins including the adaptable DNA binding domain fused with FokI, which is a complex process for designing these tools to target a novel DNA sequence. In contrast, the CRISPR/Cas9 system is a relatively simple designed system to overcome this shortage [ 35 , 36 ]. Besides, the shRNA mainly targeted transcription products of HPV16 oncogene, which means it has a limited impact on the HPV DNA which was integrated into human cells, suggesting that this approach might only have a temporary effect.…”
