Application of photodynamic therapy with the use of superluminescent light-emitting diode (sLED) lamp in actinic keratosis

Abstract: Introduction. Actinic keratosis is a chronic disease that often requires many treatment cycles. The choice of a treatment method depends on the thickness and number of lesions as well as their extent. An efficient method of treatment, especially in the case of superficial and moderately thick lesions, is photodynamic therapy. Objective. Assessment of the photodynamic therapy with the use of a superluminescent light-emitting diode lamp after previous application of 5-aminolevulinic acid based on the observation… Show more

“…LLLT is believed to act by increased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, oxidative stress modification, and transcription factor induction. It is hypothesized that LLLT affects the hair growth cycle by preventing premature catagen and increasing the proliferation rate of active anagen-phase hair follicles [65][66][67]. In a study conducted on 16 women, eyebrow hair regrowth was observed after 10 sessions conducted once a week.…”

“…AK can be located on the top of the head, on the forehead, nose, auricles, dorsum of hands and on forearms. 34 Usually there are numerous hyperkeratotic patches or papules on the sun-damaged skin. There are 3 clinical AK grades, which correspond to three dermoscopic patterns.…”

“…As a result, proteins, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and phospholipids become permanently damaged, and also changes in microcirculation and local inflammatory reactions, and cell apoptosis occur. Damage to the surrounding healthy tissues can be minimised by modifying the selectivity of the uptake and an appropriate selection of the wavelength and duration of the therapy [1,9,10]. A limited penetration capacity of the photosensitiser is an important problem in the course of the therapy.…”
