Application of Plant Oils as Ecologically Friendly Hydraulic Fluids

Abstract: This paper presents the results of physicochemical and tribological tests of vegetable oils obtained by the supercritical fluid extraction method from berry seeds. The research was conducted by using these oils as the raw material for the biodegradable hydraulic working fluids. The oils were assessed in terms of kinematic viscosity, anti-wear properties, resistance to oxidation and corrosive effects to copper and the pour point. The best results were achieved in the case of the blackcurrant seed oil. In order … Show more

“…By avoiding the use of antioxidant additions, it revealed a cleaner and more sustainable production. Olszak et al [83] studied the working fluids which are generated form vegetable oils. Compared to raspberry seed oil, blackcurrant seed oil was considered as a better option for hydraulic couplings.…”

“…to reduce environment impact but on the other hand many industries are still using hydraulic systems 2 . Many studies are being conducted with the aim of replacing environmentally harmful hydraulic uids with ones that are compatible with nature and people 1,3,4 . Pneumatic and electric systems are much more environmentally friendly, because they don't have direct in uence the environment.…”

“…A critical element in hydraulic systems is the hydraulic oil, the main function of which is the transmission of fluid energy. The hydraulic oil also has additional functions, such as lubrication of moving parts, heat transfer, sealing of moving parts, corrosion protection, and contaminant discharge (Olszak et al 2020). The failure to perform one of these functions may result in components corrosions, orifice clogs, deterioration of the chemical properties and viscosity of the oil, and loss of oil additive properties.…”
