Application of polyhedral meshing strategy in indoor environment simulation: Model accuracy and computing time

Abstract: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been proven to be a versatile tool for indoor environment simulations. The discretization of computational domain (mesh generation) determines the reliability of CFD simulation and computational cost. For cases with complex/irregular geometries, the widely utilized tetrahedral meshes have critical limitations, including low accuracy, considerate grid number and computing cost. To overcome these disadvantages, the current research developed a polyhedral meshes based meshin… Show more

“…Equation (8), the traditional y+ formula was used for approximation. 63 uτ is the wall friction velocity and is defined by equation (9)where μ is the dynamic viscosity of the fluid, ρ is the density of the fluid and τw is the wall shear stress. In the trial simulation, only the average wall shear stress for each wall can be extracted to provide a reference for the selections of relevant parameters of the wall prism layer.…”

“…The tetrahedral grid is the simplest element and has the advantage of being relatively easily generated automatically compared to other grids. However, a polyhedral grid was used to obtain accurate results and to reduce the analysis time [ 25 ]. As a polyhedral mesh, the parts other than the main part were set as the growth rate to create slightly relaxed grids.…”

“…To study the airflow and contaminant distributions in an airplane cabin under different ventilation systems, either experimental measurements or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are commonly used [ 9 ]. Compared with experimental methods, CFD modeling is more efficient, and it can be used to analyze multiple cases at low cost [ 10 ]. However, it is challenging to accurately simulate airflow and contaminant transmission in an airplane cabin by CFD because of the complex geometry and flow pattern and the approximations used in the modeling method [ 11 ].…”
