Application of Proprietary Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitors in Gas Flowlines

Abstract: This paper presents the first offshore commercial application of a proprietary kinetic hydrate inhibitor (KHI) developed by Exxon. KHIs are water-soluble, non-toxic1 polymers that inhibit hydrate formation in pipelines at much lower dose rates than methanol or glycol by greatly slowing the rate of hydrate crystal formation. The KHI first underwent laboratory testing in Exxon's 4-in diameter, 275-foot-long hydrate flowloop at pressures up to 1800 psi. It was then field-tested in a 2-in diamete… Show more

“…This limitation is caused by the rheological properties of suspensions with high solid fraction and may depend on flow regime conditions. Potentiality of LDHI has been highlighted under field conditions [13,14]. Three fields of the Eastern Trough Area Project (ETAP) in the United Kingdom Central North Sea are currently operating using KI [15].…”

“…For high Re, f is given by the Nikuradse correlation (see for example Govier and Aziz [38]): (13) Between Reynolds number Re = 3000 and 10 000, f exhibits a small dependence with velocity. This dependence of f can be estimated from the Wood-Colebrook law for pipe with intermediate roughness: (14) In the following, we will focus on flow at large Reynolds number, which is the most encounter flow regime for light oil or condensate.…”

“…as hydrate inhibitors provide a guideline for the development of new green KHIs recently. There are varieties of KHIs utilized in the Gulf of Mexico, the Middle East for nearly a decade [17][18][19][20]. However, due to high cost for importing KHIs, there is few application in China, and the current technique to inhibit hydrate formation is still to inject alcohols such as methanol and ethylene glycol into pipelines.…”
