Application of Proximal Optical Sensors to Fine-Tune Nitrogen Fertilization: Opportunities for Woody Ornamentals

Abstract: Today, high amounts of residual nitrogen are regularly being reported in the open field production of hardy nursery stock. In some cases, excessive fertilizers or side-dressings are applied when circumstances are not favorable for uptake. Aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems are sensitive to enrichment with nutrients, but growers also benefit when losses are avoided. In this study, the potential of proximal optical sensors to optimize nitrogen fertilization was investigated in four woody species: Acer pse… Show more

“…Looking at the nitrogen metabolism in treated leaves and the total plant weight, no difference could be seen with the water control over time. NBI is indeed a robust indicator for determining basal metabolism in photosynthetic tissues; in healthy conditions, the plant will use most of the endogenous nitrogen in the synthesis of primarily needed proteins, such as chlorophylls, while in non-optimal conditions, part of the nitrogen will be intended for the secondary pathways, such as the flavonol ones associated with the plant's response to stresses [59]. Since no sign of phytotoxicity in the chlorophylls' metabolism was detected, we can conclude that the measured leaf surface and the root and shoot final weight were not affected either, leading to a statistical similarity among the treatments.…”

“…The SPAD value of green tea leaves can positively respond to nitrogen addition [74]. The rapid diagnosis of nutritional status using SPAD measurement and threshold reference was also applied to Acer pseudoplatanus, Ligustrum ovalifolium, Prunus laurocerasus, Tilia cordata, and Vaccinium angustifolium [75,76].…”

“…In terms of biocompatibility, no adverse effects were observed on the leaf development of olive plants treated with Th-EO and the CNCs used in this work (see Table 4). As a matter of fact, NBI, which was calculated using the ratio of chlorophyll and flavanol contents in leaves, gives a reliable indication of the health status of the plants: this index considers plants to be in good shape when most of the absorbed nitrogen is used for primary metabolic functions, such as chlorophyll synthesis, while plants could be subjected to abiotic or biotic stress when secondary metabolic products demand more nitrogen, lowering the NBI values [69,70]. Several studies have already pointed out the absence of toxicity for plants treated with CNCs, confirming our results, but when it comes to essential oils, the outcomes can be more unpredictable, since many factors are involved in the biological activity of EOs, such as temperature, humidity, and concentration [71].…”
