Application of RADAR Corner Reflectors for the Detection of Small Vessels in Synthetic Aperture Radar

Abstract: Detection of vessels from space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is an important area of research with many applications, including fisheries monitoring, counter-piracy, and maritime border security. The detection of vessels on the ocean surface in SAR imagery requires that the vessel has sufficiently high radar cross section (RCS). In general, the RCS of an object is a function of the object's material, size, and shape, as well as RADAR parameters such as center frequency. Even, two objects of the sa… Show more

“…Teknologi satelit [1] dan radar [2] juga telah dilakukan, akan tetapi masih memiliki kendala utama diantaranya efisiensi biaya yang tinggi dan ukuran perangkat yang digunakan juga relatif cukup besar. Solusi yang paling efektif adalah dengan memanfaatkan sistem komunikasi pemancar stasiun radio terdekat yang berada di daratan.…”

“…A new SAR technique called CopSAR (coprime SAR) enables the identification of ships within a maritime environment, by increasing the range swath without the loss of the geometric resolution (Di Martino and Iodice, 2014). In addition, the detection of small vessel may be improved by using corner reflectors, as proposed in (Stastny et al, 2014). An operational ship monitoring system based on SAR processing is presented in (Margarit et al, 2009).…”

“…The West African ocean region is presently the leading hotspot for global piracy activities, with the focus having shifted from the Indian Ocean in recent years [ 4 ]. Earth observation data can be used to monitor vessel activities and to enhance maritime security in the West African subregion [ 4 , 35 ]. Coastal pollution from thermal plants, oil spills, plastics, and other wastes have become major environmental issues of the recent decade [ 1 , 27 ].…”
