Application of serum microRNA-9-5p, 21-5p, and 223-3p combined with tumor markers in the diagnosis of non-small-cell lung cancer in Yunnan in southwestern China

Abstract: PurposeXuanwei City is located in late Permian coal-accumulating areas of the northeastern region of Yunnan Province. In China, morbidity and mortality from lung cancer are highest in Yunnan. Identifying useful circulating markers suitable for the diagnosis of lung cancer in this region is quite meaningful. In this study, we evaluated diagnostic roles of serum miR-9-5p, 21-5p, 223-3p, 135b-5p, 339-5p, and 501-5p in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Yunnan. Moreover, we evaluated the diagnosti… Show more

“…Concerning miR-429, its up-regulation in lung adenocarcinoma cell lines was associated with cell proliferation and cell metastasis [ 79 ]. Moreover, circulating microRNAs from liquid biopsy have been proposed as diagnostic and/or prognostic tools in lung cancer [ 80 ]. Among them, elevated serum levels of miR-141, miR-200b, and miR-429 have been proposed as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis in this context [ 81 , 82 ], even though elevation of these microRNAs in blood samples might not be lung specific as it has also been reported in other cancers.…”

“…Dysregulated miRNAs may act as tumor suppressors or oncogenes (oncomiRs). Combined serum levels of several miRNAs (miR-9-5p, miR-21-5p, and miR-223-3p) with existing tumor biomarkers offer better detection of NSCLC than the tumor biomarkers alone [10]. Functional studies of dysregulated miRNAs in cancer implicate miRNAs as attractive targets for novel therapeutic development [11, 12].…”

“…In the referred study, the AUC for miR‐223 was reported to be 0.809 (95% CI: 0.749‐0.860), and its sensitivity and specificity were described to be 69% and 84%, respectively 30 . Yang et al 31 examined the role of serum miR‐223 in NSCLC diagnosis and the AUC was reported to be 0.740 (95% CI: 0.653‐0.816), while the sensitivity and specificity values were not reported. D'Antona et al 32 proposed new aspects of miR‐223 diagnostic performance in patients with NSCLC.…”
