Application of Severe Plastic Deformation Techniques to Magnesium for Enhanced Hydrogen Sorption Properties

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper we review the latest developments in the use of severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques for enhancement of hydrogen sorption properties of magnesium and magnesium alloys. Main focus will be on two techniques: Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) and Cold Rolling (CR). After a brief description of these two techniques we will discuss their effects on the texture and hydrogen sorption properties of magnesium alloys. In particular, the effect of the processing temperature in ECAP on te… Show more

“…ARB was also investigated as a mean to improve the activation of magnesium and its alloys 24,33,34,35,36 . Even though ECR does not refine the grain size at the same level, it may lead Mg-alloys to have good H 2 storage properties because of the presence of preferential texture in the direction of the (002) basal plane of Mg 24,37,38,39 . The deformation of metals by ECR occurs under high friction and in a non-homogeneous way through their thickness because of the introduction of large amounts of redundant shear-strain on the material's surface 40 .…”

“…In route B, samples are rotated by 90° in the same direction between the passes. In route C, the samples are rotated by 180° between the passes [15]. Samples passed through the die once indicates one pass processed by ECAP.…”

“…In route B, samples are rotated by 90 • in the same direction between the passes. In route C, the samples are rotated by 180 • between the passes [15]. The repetitive passes, together with the combination of different routes, strongly determines the final microstructure of the material [16,17].…”

“…The melting of ZK60 Mg alloy was carried out in a resistance furnace with an iron crucible containing approximately 100 kg of metal and protected by CO 2 + 0.5% SF 6 atmosphere in order to prevent severe oxidation. The melt was transferred to a tundish from crucible at 710 • C and then transferred to the crystallizer.…”
