Application of Shielding Coils in Underwater Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Abstract: Underwater wireless power transfer (WPT) technology can enhance the endurance of the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). WPT that based on electromagnetic theory will generate eddy current loss (ECL) in seawater. In this paper, we make use of shielding coils to weaken the electromagnetic field (EMF) in seawater, which can reduce ECL and improve the transfer efficiency. Simplified circuit models were proposed to provide an intuitive and comprehensive analysis of the transfer efficiency and the finite element … Show more

“…In addition, our approach formulates a second fitness function as: Fitness 2 (Ind) = t chg × I chg × β i×t (13) This last equation represents the weighted charged energy in the battery when I chg is applied during t chg . Note that we included the β i×t factor to scale the chromosomes variability due to the scale difference between charging currents in 10 −3 amperes and charging times in seconds.…”

“…With mobility policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are based on the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs), where the development of vehicle battery charging systems has become a hot topic in the research area of WPT technologies [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. In a similar way, the unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) are mainly powered by batteries and WPT is also a hot research topic [ 6 ].…”

“…Conversely, the high-gain region reaches power gains up to 12 𝑑𝐵, permitting to deliver much more power to the receiver, but at the cost of a very narrow bandwidth (less than 0.5 𝑀𝐻𝑧). Notice that bandwidth is dramatically reduced in both scenarios when the mutual coupling between the MTMs force 𝑓 0 to decrease, with one exception for 𝑁 = [9,10] in Figure 3.11(b). In the high-gain region, when 𝑁 is high, not only the MTM slabs get coupled but they also interact strongly via their mutual coupling.…”

“…Besides that, docking stations have a high-cost maintainability, being susceptible to biofouling, contaminants and any other sort of dirt collected by it over time [8]. In [9], coil shielding strategies are presented to minimize the induced eddy currents, which are the major source of loss at the transmitter. In [10], multi-coil based receivers are proposed to minimize the parallel and angular alignment dependency of the magnetic coupling.…”
