Application of silicon in plant tissue culture

Abstract: Silicon (Si) is one of the most plentiful mineral elements in soil. It is a macroelement involved in the responses of plants to a variety of abiotic stresses. The culture medium composition, particularly the mineral nutrients, greatly impacts the growth as well as the morphogenesis of in vitro plant cultures. Numerous morphological and physiological disorders including hyperhydricity, upwardly curled leaves, shoot tip necrosis, and fasciation are often related to inorganic nutrient imbalances of the tissue cul… Show more

“…As mentioned earlier, one of the most important effects of silicon on plants is to increase the plants photosynthetic activity and nutrient uptake (Sahebi et al 2016). Although silicon is not being a part of any plant tissue culture media, the positive role of Si to improve physiological and morphologic potentials such as increasing callus growth and regeneration has been shown in different in vitro cultures (Ma 2004;He et al 2013;Sivanesan and Park 2014).…”

“…Moreover, in vitro approaches also offer better prospects during the selection stage in a breeding program since some environmental limitations can be solved using this system (KHALID & AFTAB, 2016). Rezende et al An alternative recently studied that aimed to reduce the saline effects on plants is to use the silicon fertilization (SAHEBI et al, 2016). Silicon (Si) is found in greater quantities on Earth's crust, and its essentiality for plants has not been proven yet.…”

“…Epstein (2001) concludes that Si accumulates in plants at the same level as that of macronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Furthermore, Sahebi et al (2016) reports positive effects of Si on plant growth and development.…”
