Application of simplified Fuhrman grading system in clear‐cell renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: RESULTSIn univariate analysis, the four-tiered and three-tiered grading systems showed similar accuracies (76.5 vs 76.2%, P = 0.614) for predicting cancer-specific survival, which were greater than that of the two-tiered system (72.5%; both P < 0.05).Of the three grading systems, only the threetiered system was an independent predictor of cancer-specific survival in multivariate analysis ( P = 0.046).When receiver operating characteristicderived areas under the curve (AUCs) of multivariate models for predictin… Show more

“…The study cohort consisted of 123 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy for ccRCC between July and September 2012 at the Department of Urology, Peking University First Hospital (Beijing, China). General patient characteristics, including age, gender and tumor features, such as location, T stage and Fuhrman grade (7,8), were collected. The present study was approved by the institutional review board of Peking University First Hospital.…”

“…The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The tumors were graded according to the criteria of the Fuhrman grading system of malignant tumors, and the clinical tumor stage was classified according to the tumor, node, metastasis classification system (25,26). RCC specimens and corresponding normal healthy kidney tissues located as far as possible from the tumor were obtained.…”

“…The histological cell type of all specimen slices was determined by experienced pathologists and all samples were diagnosed as conventional CCRCC. The clinical tumor stages and characteristics were classified according to the tumor node metastasis (TNM) classification system (41), and the nuclear grade was evaluated according to the Fuhrman grading system of malignant tumors (42). RCC tissue samples and corresponding healthy kidney tissues located at a maximal distance from the tumor were collected immediately following surgical resection.…”
