Application of SiO2 nanoparticles as pretreatment alleviates the impact of drought on the physiological performance of Prunus mahaleb (Rosaceae)

Abstract: We studied the physiological responses of Prunus mahaleb (Mahaleb) seedlings to drought stress when previously irrigated (or not) with different concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles (SNPs). SNPs were applied at four concentrations (0, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1) for 45 days, and then seedlings were subjected to three watering treatments including low (300 mL water every 3 d), moderate (150 mL water every 3 d) and severe drought stress (no irrigation) for 19 days. Results showed that gas exchange – photosynthesis, s… Show more

“…SNPs play an important role in alleviating the adverse effects of environmental stress on plants [ 18 , 19 , 107 , 132 ]. Based on relevant studies, we proposed some potential mechanisms that may explain how SNPs increase plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.…”

“…Drought inhibits the germination of plant seeds, impairs plant photosynthesis, and hinders plant growth. SNPs increase the drought tolerance of wheat [ 131 ], cherries [ 132 ], strawberries [ 133 ], and barley [ 134 ].…”

“…Nanomaterials are materials that have a particle size of 1 to 100 nanometers and incorporate novel physical, chemical, and biological characteristics compared to materials of large size. Researchers believe that the uptake of nanoparticles (NPs) in plants is better than the similar chemicals applied to the plant in bulk shape [9][10][11][12]. An array of physical, chemical, and biological methods has been used to synthesize NPs [13][14][15].…”

“…However, the intentional use of this technology in agricultural activities could have several unforeseen and irreversible consequences (Kah, 2015 ; Mahapatra et al, 2022 ). New environmental and unexpected health safety concerns could limit the application of this technology in agricultural crop productivity (Dimkpa and Bindraban, 2017 ; Ashkavand et al, 2018 ; Mittal et al, 2020 ), also in food security (Lopez-Moreno et al, 2018 ; White and Gardea-Torresdey, 2018 ; Iqbal, 2019 ; Rajput et al, 2021 ). This review provides a better understanding of NFs to encourage interaction among the scientists to expand its application for crop improvement in agriculture.…”
