Application of Titanium Dioxide in Cement and Concrete Technology

Abstract: Public awareness of the need to protect the environment deepens and expands to new areas of life, including new technologies used in civil engineering. These technologies include, among others, the technology of photocatalytic concrete products, which are capable of purifying air. The use of this type of technology is closely linked with the campaign for Sustainable Development. The article discusses the photocatalytic properties of titanium dioxide and its use in various industries. The test results of TioCem… Show more

“…Iron shavings are the waste extracted from nailing of iron rods at industries. [11][12] The partial replacement of the titanium dioxide improves the strength of concrete and helps in depollution of polluted air and, creates a charge separation of electrons which disperses on the Photocatalytic surface and reacts with external substances, decomposing organic compounds [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. There is an improvement in strength property of the matrix material through addition of iron dissipate as powder form [11].…”

“…Two well-known examples of the use of white photoactive cement in large scale projects are church "Dives in Misericordia" in Rome in Italy and the building "Cité de la Musique" in Chambéry in France. The research team in this project believes that the TioCem photoactive cements were technically successful [2][3][4][5], achieving self-cleaning properties of its surface, but the main limitation of wider use was its high price, which was number of times higher (the price difference would vary in different countries) than price of regular grey or white cement.…”

“…Proces samooczyszczania się powierzchni jest możliwy dzięki superhydrofilowym właściwościom nanokrystalicznego dwutlenku tytanu. Pod wpływem promieniowania UV kąt zwilżania powierzchni TiO 2 maleje niemal do zera, co prowadzi do równomiernego pokrycia powierzchni betonu cienką warstwą wody, tworzącym płaszczyznę poślizgu dla usuwanych zanieczyszczeń [11,14,15].…”
