Application of water quality index for groundwater quality assessment: Thirumanimuttar sub-basin, Tamilnadu, India

Abstract: An attempt has been made to understand the hydrogeochemical parameters to develop water quality index in Thirumanimuttar sub-basin. A total of 148 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions. The domination of cations and anions was in the order of Na>Mg>Ca>K for cations and Cl>HCO(3) >SO(4) in anions. The hydrogeochemical facies indicate alkalis (Na and K) exceed alkaline earths (Ca and Mg) and strong acids (Cl and SO(4)) exceed weak acid (HCO(3)). Water quality index rating w… Show more

“…The analyses of water samples represented the total load of arsenic (dissolved plus colloid bound) in the water samples. Physical parameters like pH, TDS and EC were determined by a portable combine meter (Milwaukee, model SM802) and TH was measured by the following equation: TH = 2.497Ca + 4.115 mg (Vasanthavigar et al, 2010). The major cations and anions including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate and nitrate were determined according to standard specifications prescribed by APHA et al, (1992).…”

“…Assessment of quality of this vital resource and monitoring of its different parameters is essential for particularly water from those sources which serve as drinking water sources (Reddi et al 1993). Groundwater quality has been deteriorating over the last few decades due to massive rise in rate of industrialization and population (Pichaiah et al 2013;Vasanthavigar et al 2010).…”

“…The main purpose of WQI is to change the complex water quality data into understandable and usable information by which common people can know the status of water sources in a particular region (Akoteyon et al 2011;Vasanthavigar et al 2010;Balan et al 2012). The weighted arithmetic index method is used in present case for calculation of WQI using 11 water quality characteristics namely, turbidity, pH, total hardness, alkalinity, chloride, total dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, nitrate and iron, which showed maximum variations in seasons and also varied significantly at different sampling sites, using the following equation:…”
