Application of Wavelet Transform to Damage Identification in the Steel Structure Elements

Abstract: This work concerns the concept and verification of the experimental possibility of using a wavelet transform to assess a steel structure’s condition. In the research, a developed measuring stand was used. Mechanical waves in the metal plate were excited by the impact. These waves were recorded with an electroacoustic transducer and registered in the form of electrical signals. Both the signals generated by the actuator of the plate and the signals reaching the transducer were recorded. The registered data were… Show more

“…There are many wavelet functions, e.g., Haar wavelet, Symlet, Coiflet, Meyer, Gaussian, Mexican hat, or Morlet, and new ones are constantly developed. Previous studies of the authors [14][15][16] proved that, in the class of considered problem, the most effective appeared to be the Daubechies wavelet [17]. The comparison between the efficiency of Haar, Daubechies and Coiflet wavelet in damage detection was discussed in [18].…”

“…Specifically, a Wavelet technique (see, e.g., [17,18]) is selected, as an efficient approach for this purpose. Being already successfully applied in the application fields of damage identification (see, e.g., [19][20][21]) and signal denoising (see, e.g., [9][10][11]22]), a Wavelet analysis can be specifically considered in bridge signal processing, as e.g., proposed in [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. It is here applied to the same two channels of each side of the central span of the bridge only, assuming that the outcomes could easily be extended to the channels of the other two spans.…”

“…In 2020, Knitter-Piatkowska et al [ 31 ] developed the concept and verified the experimental possibility of using a wavelet transform to assess a steel structure’s condition. In 2020, Palacz et al [ 32 ] presented a process for numerical modeling of one-dimensional problems related to the propagation of elastic waves and their application for damage detection purposes.…”
