Application possibilities of selection indices in Pannon White rabbits’ breeding programme

Abstract: Genetic parameters for 21-d litter weight (LW21) and thigh muscle volume (TMV) were estimated, and based on these traits a two-trait selection index was created with the purpose of increasing the efficiency of the Pannon White rabbits' breeding programme. Litter weight at 21 d of age (LW21, n ¼ 22,002) and thigh muscle volume (TMV, n ¼ 8124) measurements (based on computed tomography -CT) were analysed that were recorded between 1992 and 2016. The evaluated animals were reared in 4178 litters and the total num… Show more

“…The idea behind the present research is to exploit computed tomography (CT) to perform a selection of different populations of rabbits in function of the desired productive/commercial target [ 9 ]. The genetic selection of rabbits by exploiting CT has the advantage of allowing an effective evaluation of the body composition in vivo, avoiding animal slaughtering.…”

“…However, a significant proportion of rabbit meat producers in Ukraine are still concentrated in the private sector and use the genetic resources of domestic breeds, which necessitates research to increase the meat productivity of rabbits [7][8][9][10]. Purebred rabbit breeding requires the rabbit breeder to constantly analyze the performance of families and lines using the latest methods for assessing the breeding value of animals, taking into account the economic component, which determines the profitability of the industry [5,11].…”
